Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital
Construction has started for the expansion and renovation of Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital. The expansion design team includes Watkins, Hamilton, Ross Architects, Inc. and Smith, Seckman Reid, Inc., engineer, with Mac Haik Healthcare Ltd acting as construction manager. The hospital expansion includes approximately 170,000 square feet and a renovation of about 47,000 square feet.
The east section of the hospital will be two floors, partially added above existing building, and partially elevated above grade. It will expand the hospital's ICU, nursery and labor area.
The north section will be a new four-story addition that will also be built partially on top of the existing building, and partially as a new structure. This addition will include a new emergency room area, a new diagnostic and testing area, an expanded surgery and nursery area and an entire floor of mechanical equipment.
A new central plant includes two 1300-ton York chillers and two 400 BHP Sellers boilers. Also included in the new construction is an added floor in the existing patient tower.
As in all projects of this kind, the renovation will be the most challenging for the construction team. Not only is the coordination and phasing difficult, but the hospital system is now stepping up their focus on the risks associated with infection control. Then there are the same old too much stuff and not enough space. There are differing conditions that do not allow for new MEP systems to fit within spaces already too congested by existing duct, piping and conduit.
This project was secured by the efforts of Bob Taylor's entire estimating group, who has spent time to budget it for Manhattan Construction in early 2002. Gowan's scope for this project includes piping, led by Larry Huff and Ralph Craven in the field, and sheet metal, led by Mike Copeland. Support from the detailing group includes Othon Guillen, piping team leader, and Ron Richards, sheet metal team leader.
